CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

In 1975 the pressure groups Pressure for Economic and Social Toryism (PEST), the Macleod Group, the Social Tory Action Group and the Manchester Tory Reform Group merged to form the Tory Reform Group.

The main aim of the Group is to encourage the Conservative Party to adopt centre-right, One Nation policies. It regularly publishes policy papers and issues a quarterly journal, The Reformer. It also organises events such as conferences, lectures, receptions and fringe meetings at Conservative Party Conferences.

The Group's President is Kenneth Clarke MP. Former Presidents were Nicholas Scott (1975-1980), Peter Walker (1980-1991) and David Hunt (1991-1997).

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of the Tory Reform Group, 1970-2006, including correspondence, minutes of meetings, financial papers, membership records and files regarding events and seminars. Subjects covered include economics, the environment, social policy and Europe (including papers regarding the Single Currency/Euro). The collection also contains papers of PEST - Pressure for Economic and Social Toryism (TRG/1), Parliamentary Mainstream and Conservative Mainstream (TRG/3), and the Macleod Group of Conservative MPs (TRG/4).

A further deposit was received in July 2007 covering the period 1976-2006 - the papers cover TRG, Conservative Mainsteam and Parliamentary Mainstream and include details of seminars and meetings.
