CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Upper Street Independent chapel, built in 1788, had attached to it a small graveyard, which in 1817 was extended by the Reverend Evan Jones; since the ground was used for nonconformist burials it became known as New - or Little - Bunhill Fields. By the early 1850s it was managed by a private company, who also managed Abney Park, City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. By 1895 the ground had been divided up, and no visible sign remained of its former use. The remains were moved 1996-97 to Islington Cemetery, Trent Park, Cockfosters Road, Cockfosters, Barnet, Herts. The site was redeveloped and the new building on the site is the public house "Angel on the Green".
