The Worshipful Company of Soapmakers is now defunct and no other records are known to survive.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Worshipful Company of Soapmakers, comprising charter of incorporation, 1606-1607? The "H.M.C. 8th Report" suggested the date of the charter was 1661, but this is probably incorrect. Legible names from the charter are: first Master: George Hubbersty; first Wardens: George Budd of London, Thomas Edwardes of Southwark, both soapmakers; first Assistants, inter alia: John Rosse of London, Christopher Sh--- of London, and Edward B----- of Southwark.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Formerly part of the Duke of Manchester's archives, Kimbolton, Hunts: see Historical Manuscripts Commission 8th Report, Appendix II (1881), no.662. The Duke's archives were formerly deposited in the Public Record Office, this document having the ref: P.R.O. 30/15/662. It was sold at Sotheby's on 27 October 1970, part of lot 336, and presented to Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section in October 1984 by Hofmann and Freeman, Antiquarian Booksellers. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008. The document was catalogued in 1984 by a member of Guildhall Library staff.
