CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Saint Martin Outwich was situated on Threadneedle Street at the junction with Bishopsgate. The earlier medieval church was rebuilt in 1403 by the Oteswich brothers. It was not damaged in the Great Fire of 1666, only to be badly damaged in a fire of 1765. A replacement was constructed in 1798. It was demolished in 1874 and the site was sold to provide funds for suburban church building. The parish was united with Saint Helen Bishopsgate in 1873.

Records of the parish of Saint Martin Outwich, Threadneedle Street, City of London, including registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns; Vestry minutes; Churchwardens' and overseers' accounts, vouchers and papers; administrative papers; records relating to the repair of the church; poor rate assessments and deeds relating to parish properties.

The records of St Helen Bishopsgate and St Martin Outwich have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since 1922. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
