CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Butchers' Charitable Institution was founded in 1828 as the meat industry's trade charity, assisting people unable to work or retired, a function it continues today. Although it is entirely independent from the Butchers' Company, it uses Butchers' Hall for its committee and annual general meetings, and has for some periods maintained offices elsewhere for day-to-day business, including 61 West Smithfield from 1909-c.1995. In 1986 it merged with the London Meat Traders' and Drovers' Benevolent Association to become the Butchers' and Drovers' Charitable Institution.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Butchers' Charitable Institution including Committee minute books; reports; papers relating to the merger with the London Meat Traders' and Drovers' Benevolent Association; annual reports; financial accounts; applications for assistance; registers of annual subscriptions; registers of members; press cuttings; photographs; historical notes and dinner menus.

Some material relating to pensioners or personnel has a 30 year closure period. More recent material is retained by the Institution.

Catalogued by Guildhall Library staff in 1991, July 2005, March 2006 and July 2007. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
