CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The City of London was divided into wards for the purpose of government as early as Norman times. The wards had responsibility to keep the peace, supervise trade and oversee sanitation, and each ward has the right to elect an Alderman and Commoners to sit in the Court of Common Council.

One of the twenty-six wards of the City of London, lying between Aldgate and Cornhill wards. It contained no City parish churches after the suppression of St Mary Axe and St Augustine Papey.

Records of Lime Street Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise minutes, accounts and a list of voters. They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff.

The archives of the ward have been deposited with the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

There is a short printed history of the ward in J.C. Thornley's The Wards of the City of London, being a series of articles reprinted from the "Architect (1919-20) pp 232-4. Other works available in the Printed Books Section of Guildhall Library and which may be useful include William Chancellor, Account of the several wards, precincts and parishes in the City of London (1787) and A.B. Beaven, Aldermen of the City of London temp. Henry III-1912 (1908-13, 2 vols).
