CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The African Banking Corporation was established in 1890 as a British limited company, based in London, to provide banking services in British South Africa. It took over much of the staff, premises and business of the former Cape of Good Hope Bank. During 1891 and 1892 the Corporation absorbed three local banks, the Western Province Bank, the Kaffrarian Colonial Bank and the Worcester Commercial Bank. The Corporation itself was taken over in 1921 by the Standard Bank of South Africa.

The offices of the Corporation were at 43-46 Threadneedle Street, 1891-1905, and 63 London Wall, 1906-20.

Records of the African Banking Corporation comprising financial accounts, agreements, correspondence and scrapbooks.

Immediate source of acquisition:

The archives of the African Banking Corporation were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library on 29 August 1989 by Standard Chartered Bank. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Related material:

Board minutes and records of shareholders were retained by Standard Chartered. In addition, further archives listed in Pressnell and Orbell, A Guide to the Historical Records of British Banking (1985), have not been deposited and the whereabouts of these other records is unknown.
