Administrative/Biographical history:

Manor House Asylum was a private lunatic asylum (metropolitan licensed house) founded by Edward Francis Tuke (c 1776-1846) and continued by the Tuke family. The Asylum moved to Chiswick House in 1893 and was later known as Chiswick House Asylum.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of Manor House Asylum, 1870-1925, comprising six casebooks relating to male and female patients and one of voluntary boarders, both male and female. There is also a file of correspondence to members of the Tuke family and others. The collection includes undated material.

MS.5725 is a male and female casebook, MSS.6222-6224 are male casebooks, MSS.6225-6226 are female casebooks, MS.6227 is a voluntary boarders casebook and MS.5726 is a file of correspondence. The material is arranged chronologically. There are gaps in the sequence.

MSS.5725, 6222-6223 and 6225 are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking. The remaining items are subject to access restriction for varying periods: see individual item records for detail.
