Gilbert Spencer was a British artist who painted portraits, landscapes and murals. He was brother to Sir Stanley Spencer.

Scope and content/abstract:
Portrait of Lilian de Lissa, first principal of Gipsy Hill Teacher Training College, by artist Gilbert Spencer. The painting was commissioned by the college as a present for Miss de Lissa and presented to her in a ceremony in October 1953. The portrait has been held by Gipsy Hill Teacher Training College prior to passing to Kingston Polytechnic and Kingston University.

Archival history:
Portrait was presented to Lilian de Lissa, who left it to be displayed at Gipsy Hill Teacher Training College. It was later past to Kingston Polytechnic once the College merged with this in 1975, and in turn was passed to Kingston University 1992. The painting was on display in the Boardroom of the old Town House prior to its transfer to Kingston University Archives and Special Collections.
