CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Pupil's Physical Society of Guy's Hospital was originally started in 1830 as a student's society for the discussion of subjects of medical and surgical importance, showing of interesting cases and reading papers. It was managed by a Committee of Presidents, elected by the society from the senior students and house officers. The ordinary meetings were attended by students only, and intended as a forum for discussing medical problems.

Records of the Pupil's Physical Society of Guy's Hospital, 1830-1966, comprising minutes, 1830-1966, and copies of papers presented to the Society, covering a wide range of subjects such as diseases, poisoning, wounds, fractures, pregnancy and surgery; printed session programmes of meetings and papers, 1930-1960; lists of members, 1874-1913, with expenses and minutes of Presidents' meetings, [1887]-1913;
student essays awarded the prize of the Pupil's Physical Society and presented to meetings of the Society, 1831-1966;
papers of the Secretary of the Society, 1870-1958, including manuscripts of speeches to meetings, c1870-1891; correspondence relating to Society business, including attendance at meetings, management of Guy's Hospital Gazette and award of essay prizes, 1871-1891; bills and receipts, [1884-1958]; invitations to speakers; descriptions of medical cases presented to meetings, 1923-1958.
