CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

In 2000, the RCOG put in place a new board structure in order to free-up Council's time to concentrate on strategic and specialty wide issues. The three boards (Standards, Services and Education) were given executive and decision-making authority and were able to ratify the decisions of reporting committees and groups. They were responsible directly to Council and met quarterly. The first meeting of the Standards Board took place in July 2000. It assumed some functions of the previous Clinical Effectiveness and Standards Board but also dealt with training and manpower issues. Its initial remit was: development of a structured programme of audit and guideline activity and the co-ordination of a clinical effectiveness programme; development of clinical governance encompassing continuous professional development and revalidation; recognition of UK and overseas training posts and the future accreditation of services; monitoring and development of College programmes leading to Specialist Registration; and consideration of the impact of medical workforce issues on the specialty. As the College began to undertake new work in the area of clinical governance and standards, the Board acquired new functions and in May 2007 a new remit was agreed: to develop the overall strategic direction in relation to professional, clinical and service standards; to consider the views of external organisations and the Consumers Forum; to consider scientific and ethical issues and their impact on the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology; to direct and oversee the RCOG clinical guidelines and audit programmes and activities in relation to service standards, including the development of service models; to supervise continuing professional development, appraisal and revalidation activites and to ensure that satisfactory programmes were established for doctors and trusts requesting support from the College.

DRCOG: The College Archives holds a card index to DRCOG passes from the 1940s to late 1998. The Head of the Examination Department also has an index to DRCOG passes and failures dating back to the 1940s. A database of DRCOG holders from 1990 is maintained by the Administration Department.

MRCOG: A database of MRCOG holders is maintained by the Membership Services Department. The database does not include Fellows or Members who died before 1990. The College Archives holds card indexes of deceased and living MRCOG holders between 1929 and 1998. The indexes note the date of admission to the FRCOG or MRCOG. A bi-annual Register of Fellows and Members (living only) is compiled by the Administration Department; copies are transferred regularly to the Archives and will be found at A12/1-3.

ODTS (overseas doctors' training scheme): A database of overseas doctors who have applied to sit the MRCOG is maintained by the ODTS Administrator. Once the doctors pass the MRCOG their names are removed from this database and added to the MRCOG database maintained by the Membership Services Department, with an annotation to indicate that they are overseas doctors.

ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information:

Published material and some administrative records produced by the office were transferred to the Archives on an ad hoc basis by the Publications Officer until 1998. From this date, regular transfers of records were established in accordance with Disposal Agreement No 14, agreed between the Publications Officer and the Archivist.

This material is no longer created as a separate series; copy minutes are now submitted to and retained with Council minutes and papers at A2.

Archival history:

Several early catalogues were not transferred and are no longer extant.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Transferred to the Archive by the Secretary to the Services Committee in June 2005.
