CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Wallace Beresford Shute (b.1911), BA, MD, FRCS, FAC, FACOG, Hon FRCOG, graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (Honour Science) 1933 and Doctor of Medicine 1936 from the University of Western Ontario. After six years' post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Detroit, Montreal and Chicago, he practised for a short time in Canada, before volunteering for the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1943. He was Gynaecologist to the Canadian Women's Army in England before demobilisation in 1946. He then practised in Ottawa until his retirement in 1985. Dr Shute has made several significant contributions to medical science, particularly with his invention of the Shute Parallel Obstetrical Forceps. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the RCOG in June 1994 (bibliography: see Dr Shute's biography and c.v at S48/1).

Papers of Dr Wallace Beresford Shute, 1959-1997, comprising correspondence relating to presentation of the video cassette copies of his 1991 film "The Shute Parallel Forceps: its techniques and clinical use", 1997; biography and curriculum vitae of Dr Shute and instructions for use of the Shute Parallel Obstetrical Forceps, 1997; copies of papers published by Dr Shute and others, mainly on the use of the forceps, with some related correspondence , 1959-1994.

Copyright in all correspondence belongs to Dr Shute, other than the copies of published papers which are in the copyright of the publishers, and one RCOG paper which is in the copyright of the College.

The collection was passed, together with replacement copies of the video cassettes also described below, to the College Archives by the Honorary Secretary in 1997.

During a visit to the College in 1997 Dr Shute presented two video cassette copies of his film "The Shute Parallel Forceps: its techniques and clinical use", 1991, to the Honorary Secretary. Replacement copies of the films, which were not compatible with British video recorders, have been made and are held by the RCOG Archives (Ref: R5/14).
