Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The medieval parish church of Saint Helen Bishopsgate was attached to a Benedictine nunnery, founded on the site in around 1204. When the religious house was dissolved in 1538, the church reverted to its parochial use.

The parish of Saint Martin Outwich was united with Saint Helen Bishopsgate in 1873, and its church, which had been destroyed by fire in 1765 and rebuilt in 1796, was pulled down in 1874.

The records include parish registers (baptisms, marriages, banns, burials), service registers, Churchwardens' accounts, church rate and poor rate assessments, Vestry minutes, administrative papers and deeds, estate papers, and faculties. Date ranges of registers: Christenings 1575-2011; Marriages 1575-1870, 2004-2010; Burials 1575-1853; Banns 1653-1993; Confirmations 1956-2011.

The records of St Helen Bishopsgate and St Martin Outwich have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since 1922. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
