Administrative/Biographical history:

The company was established in 1806 for life assurance business. Its first address was in Regent Street, but by 1851 it also had an office at 2 Royal Exchange Buildings which later moved to 14 Cornhill.

In 1906, the company merged with Alliance Assurance Company which, in turn, was acquired by Sun Insurance Company in 1959.

The Provident Life Office collection comprises constitutional records, minutes, annual reports and other administrative items, as well as the life policy registers for 1806-1906.

Sun Alliance Insurance deposited the archive of Provident Life Office with the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1971, 1978 and 1994. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
