Administrative/Biographical history:
Norman MacKenzie was a student at LSE, 1939-1943. He became the Assistant Editor of the New Statesman, 1943-1962, and then the Director of the School of Education at the University of Sussex in 1962. MacKenzie edited The letters of Sidney and Beatrice Webb (Cambridge University Press, 1978), and went on to edit (with Jeanne MacKenzie) The diaries of Beatrice Webb (Virago, London, 1982-5). The letters were acquired from a variety of sources, mostly indicated in the collection.

Scope and content/abstract:
Working papers for Professor Norman MacKenzie's edition of the Webb's letters, [1889-1986], published as The letters of Sidney and Beatrice Webb (Cambridge University Press, 1978), including transcripts and photocopies of original letters, whether used in the book or not, comprising general correspondence and correspondence between Sidney and Beatrice Webb; MacKenzie's draft transcripts and notes, with final draft copies of published volumes, including final transcripts of letters used. Correspondendents range from family to prominent social scientists.
