Administrative/Biographical history:
Born, 1854; educated at Rugby; read law and qualified as a solicitor, but never practised; voyage in the Pacific, 1879-1881, where he visited Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and collected a large number of artefacts - he thus became interested in ethnography; worked as a supernumerary in the Ethnological Collections of the British Museum; second Pacific voyage, 1895; died, 1930.

Scope and content/abstract:
Papers of James Edge-Partington comprising the original manuscript version of An album of the weapons, tools, ornaments … of the natives of the Pacific Islands, issued for private circulation by James Edge-Partington and Charles Heape. Manchester, 1890-8, with illustrations (MS 339) and an index of objects from the Pacific arranged geographically, 1896, some of the objects were reproduced in An album... (MS 205).
